EDITING

When one edits copy (text) it’s essentially a rules-based endeavour concerned with grammar, spelling, punctuation and style, including ensuring the consistency of facts and presentation. A substantive (developmental) edit, on the other hand, focuses on organisational structure, logic, correctness, completeness, clarity, consistency of fact, and ethical implications. This may entail restructuring or rewriting part of or the entire document.
