These are words that\u00a0have the same pronunciation,\u00a0but are\u00a0spelt differently\u00a0and have different meanings. The sentence context and syllabic stress should make\u00a0the correct choice\u00a0of word obvious, but, regrettably,\u00a0we often see\u00a0silly trade outs between\u00a0similar sounding pairings such as &#8220;compliment&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0&#8220;complement&#8221; or &#8220;affect&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0&#8220;effect&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve recently come across the following\u00a0homophones\u00a0being inadvertently swopped: &#8220;palette&#8221; vs. &#8220;palate&#8221;, where colour and taste got confused in the mix, and, more humorously: &#8220;barristers&#8221; in lieu of &#8220;baristas&#8221;&#8230; although I&#8217;m sure that legal\u00a0beagles\u00a0are so hyped up on\u00a0caffeine that they\u00a0would no doubt judge themselves\u00a0to be\u00a0expert coffee brewers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent verbatim comment seen on facebook:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t stand people that don&#8217;t know the difference between your and you&#8217;re.\u00a0\u00a0There so stupid.&#8221; [sic][or maybe that should be &#8220;sick&#8221;?]<\/p>\n<p>The last sentence of the quoted entry\u00a0is a beautiful example of Muphry&#8217;s Law \u2013 which is an adage stating that &#8220;if you write anything criticising editing (or proofreading), there will be a fault of some kind in what you have written&#8221;.
